Over 350,000 men served in the 18 Grenadier divisions of the Waffen-SS. In addition to Germans, many European volunteers from Estonia and Latvia, from the Ukraine and the Netherlands were also included. Flemish and Walloons from Belgium were also organized in their own associations, as were Italians, Russians and Frenchmen. The German leadership had succeeded in bringing together people from different cultures for a European defense community under Totenkopf and Doppel-Sigrune.
