Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz (1891 - 1980) was educated in the apolitical spirit of the Imperial Navy and the Imperial Navy. Already awarded in the First World War as a successful submarine commander, he built with these experiences from 1935 on a new effective submarine gun, which he commanded until 1945. Since the beginning of 1943, he led the entire naval war on the German side as Commander in Chief of the Kriegsmarine. The last 23 days of the Third Reich he was finally as successor to Hitler's head of state. The International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg sentenced him in 1946 to 10 years in prison, which he served until his release in 1956 in Spandau. Then he immediately began writing down his memoirs 1935-1945.
